One of dad’s favorite candies, and even better than the original.
One of dad’s favorite candies, and even better than the original because they are super fresh and soft. This is a fun project to do with the kids.
Mock Brach's Jelly Nougats
An easy to make homemade take on the famous Brach Jelly Nougat.
Equipment
- 1 large soup pot or large double boiler
- 1 large steel bowl that fits securely into pot
- 2 8" square baking pans
- parchment paper sheets
- rotary pizza cutter
- parchment patty squares for candy wrapping Dollar Tree has parchment patty square sheets for $1.25. Beats the heck out of cutting them all yourself. Amazon also sells candy wraps, including clear ones.
Ingredients
- 1 10oz bag white baking chips 11oz bag is okay
- 1 10oz bag mini marshmallows
- 1 tbsp white Crisco or butter, but will make your candies a bit yellow
- 2 6.5oz boxes Dots candy or your favorite gummy candy
Instructions
- Line one of the 8" baking pans with parchment paper. Snip at corners to make a smooth fit. Set aside.
- Put about 3-4 inches of water in your pot with the bowl on top. Heat to boiling and keep on simmer.
- Add Crisco, white chips, and marshmallows to the bowl, in that order. Let sit for a few minutes.

- It will take several minutes for everything to start melting, but be patient. Stir occasionally to start incorporating the ingredients together.

- Keep mixing until everything is smooth and melted.

- Add Dots to the mix.

- Incorporate until fully mixed, scraping the sides of the bowl.

- Empty the melted ingredients into the parchment-lined 8" baking pan. Smooth out as best you can with a scraper. Place another parchment sheet on top and use the other 8" baking pan to press the mixture flat in the pan below for a smooth finish. Put in the fridge to completely cool, about an hour or so.

- When completely cooled, remove the candy block from the baking pan and remove parchment from top and bottom. Trim excess on all edges with the pizza cutter to create a clean edge all of the way around the block.

- Continue using the pizza cutter to make candies the size of your choice. It might be a little tough going, but use those awesome hand and forearm muscles!

- Wrap each candy in parchment paper and twist the ends.

- Keep in an air-tight container and enjoy for weeks to come!

Notes
Found this recipe on Facebook, but it called for butter instead of Crisco. I saw of lot of comments by people who made them that their nougat had yellowed, so I substituted regular Crisco for the butter. Yeah, I know Crisco is less healthy than butter, but all of the ingredients in this recipe are bad for you (like most candy), so what harm can one tablespoon of Crisco do? Ha!
